Arthur Ayto joined Bapco in December 1938, and took early retirement in 1960 due to ill-health. The following article appears in the October 1954 edition of The Islander, relating to the Ayto Cup:
The golf section this year has been fortunate enough to add another trophy to its collection. This has been presented by Mr. A. Ayto and will be awarded to the winner of the Novices Competition.
A further reference to the Ayto Cup in the April 4th 1957 edition of The Islander is as follows:
The Ayto Cup was in previous years the trophy awarded to the winner in the Novices Competition, which was abandoned this season. It is now open to players with handicap 20 to 24. The ladies will be competing in their own cup for the first time this year. ...[the Scarff/Ladies Cup for its first year ... Also] ... Pinhey - handicap 13 to 19.
There is another reference to Arthur Ayto in The Islander of January 25th 1961 (after a letter of thanks was received from him with regard to retirement gifts), and a final article about him on 12th June 1968, on the occasion of his death.
