About Us
Who AGC is and what we stand for
Awali Golf Club is an 18-hole course, which opened in 1937, measures 6734 yards of the blue tees, with a par 70 and 6309 yards of the white tees providing a challenge to both experienced and novice golfers. The course is home to the Bahrain Open Championship, the first Open competition for individual players in Middle East since 1964 for men and 1988 for ladies.
The sand course is based around Bapco Refining oil fields. Over the years the course layout has been amended to its current configuration with both front and back nine holes (par 35). Even though it’s a sand course, you need to be careful of the water on the 7th and 17th, not forgetting the graveyard just off the 15th fairway!!
AGC is a sustainable golf course, players use a piece of artificial grass when hitting from the fairways. Instead of greens there are browns. These are created by compacting rolled and treated sand and, as the players quickly discover, they give an extremely true putting surface.
The club house provides sanctuary from the heat offering a fully stocked list of beverages including the Awali Half.
Members and guests of the club, old and new make it so special, no matter what standard of golfer joins or visit the club and other facilities, we always make sure that they receive our warmest welcome.
Brief History on AGC
The oldest golf course in the GCC was officially founded in January 1937. The club had expanded from its humble beginnings of a nine-hole golf course in 1933-1936, when Bapco Refining oil workers first played golf in the vicinity of the camp at the Jebel. Bapco golfers originally played golf as the “Golf Section” of The Bapco Club. This Section became the Awali Golf Club at the beginning of the 1957/58 season with the issue of the club’s original constitution. Bapco Refining has been the Club’s major sponsor since its inception and without their generosity, the club would not exist. See the website’s “History” for further details.
